History

Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a one-of-a-kind destination with centuries of varying cultural influences that have shaped the city.

From the indigenous peoples and the Pueblos to the Spanish conquistadors to the settling of the wild, wild west by Anglo pioneers, Albuquerque's rich history is the foundation for a multicultural metropolis of nearly a million people. It was founded in 1706 and named in honor of the Viceroy of New Spain, the 10th Duke of Alburquerque (the first r was dropped along the way).

Today, the modern city of Albuquerque is a center of high-tech industry, research, and culture that retains vital connections to its past.
